Google and Universal Music Group are reportedly in early discussions regarding the legitimate use and licensing of artists' voices and soundbits for songs created with artificial intelligence (AI). This comes in response to the rise of generative AI and digitally manipulated music tracks, which often use established artists' voices and lyrics without permission. Universal's general counsel has called for a federal "right of publicity" and mechanisms that inform individuals about AI-generated content. Google and Universal are developing a tool that would allow fans to create AI-generated tracks legitimately, with copyright owners being compensated. Warner Music Group is also in talks with Google for a similar tool.
