The New York Times and OpenAI are in negotiations over a licensing deal that would require OpenAI to pay the newspaper for using its stories to develop AI tools. If OpenAI is found guilty of using the articles, federal law would require the company to destroy the infringed content and build a new dataset using authorized works. In addition, ten media organizations have petitioned for new rules to tighten copyright of published materials for AI training.
